1. Official Airport Taxi (Shared Minivan)

Luang Prabang International Airport Taxi Service Counter

The easiest and most reliable option is the official airport taxi.

There’s a service counter right after you exit the arrivals area, so even first-time visitors can find it without any trouble.

The standard fare is 100,000 kip for up to two people.

From the third passenger onward, it’s an extra 50,000 kip per person.

These are usually shared minivans.

That means you might have to wait a little until other passengers are also on board before leaving.

Still, being able to use this service any time of day or night is a big advantage.

They’ll drop you at most major hotels or near the Night Market area in the center.

Fixed, posted price — no scams
Available 24 hours
Easy to arrange directly at the airport counter

It’s a shared ride, so you sit with other passengers
You might wait a few minutes before departure
You may not be dropped exactly at your hotel’s front door

2. Tuk-tuk

tuk-tuk

If you want a very local experience, this is it.

Tuk-tuks can be the cheapest way into town if you negotiate well.

The best trick is to approach a driver who has just dropped someone off at the airport.

Many drivers would rather take you back into town for a discounted fare than drive back empty, so they’re often willing to offer a good price.

Important: tuk-tuks are not allowed to wait inside the airport grounds.

You’ll need to walk just outside the airport gate and flag one down there.

The downside: depending on timing, you might not find one right away — especially late at night.

As a rough guide, aim for about 50,000–70,000 kip total to the city center.

Often the cheapest option
Fun, very local feeling

You have to walk outside the airport grounds to find one
Availability depends on timing (especially at night)
You must negotiate the fare yourself

Where to find a tuk-tuk

Tuk-tuks are parked on the road in front of Luang Prabang International Airport.

Right outside the airport exit.

Stand near the main airport sign — that’s where drivers tend to wait after dropping off.

3. Walking

The road from Luang Prabang International Airport to the city center

Yes, you technically can walk from Luang Prabang International Airport into town.

It’s roughly 4 km, mostly along one main road, so it’s actually pretty hard to get lost.

Along the way, you’ll pass little everyday neighborhoods — and even sights like the “Old French Bridge,” a narrow bridge that only pedestrians and motorbikes can cross.

Crossing it feels a bit like an adventure.

That said, walking is only realistic if:

  1. you’re traveling very light,
  2. it’s daytime,
  3. and it’s not brutally hot.

If you’re arriving with luggage, with kids, or late at night, walking is not recommended.

Parts of the route can be very dark after sunset.

Completely free
You can enjoy the scenery at a slow pace

Takes ~1 hour and plenty of energy
Can be dark (and feel unsafe) at night
Midday heat can be intense

4. Ride-hailing Apps (LOCA, inDrive)

Ride-hailing apps like LOCA and inDrive are becoming more common in Luang Prabang.

The biggest advantages:

  • You see the fare in advance
  • No haggling
  • Private car, not shared

From the airport to the center of town, expect roughly 100,000 kip.

With 2–3 people, that can actually be good value.

However, there aren’t a lot of cars, so whether you get matched with a driver really depends on timing.

Also, you’ll need mobile data (local SIM, eSIM, or pocket Wi-Fi) to use the app.

There is free Wi-Fi at the airport, but many travelers say it doesn’t always connect properly.

There is free Wi-Fi at the airport, but many travelers say it doesn’t always connect properly.
Some people also report that prepaid SIM cards bought at the airport didn’t always work for the full number of days advertised.
Because of that, it’s safest to arrange mobile data before you arrive in Laos.

Fare is known up front
No price negotiation
Private ride

You must have internet access
You need to download the app and register
Driver availability is not guaranteed

5. Hotel Pickup

Many higher-end hotels and even some guesthouses offer airport pickup.

If you book in advance, a driver will meet you on arrival holding a sign with your name.

You just follow them to the car — zero stress.

Typical cost is around USD $10–15 per ride, and sometimes it’s free depending on the property.

Important: you usually have to request airport transfer when you book the room.

Don’t forget to confirm it with your hotel before you fly.

Most stress-free / door-to-door
No need to explain the address
Straight to your hotel

Usually more expensive than local options
Must be arranged in advance

Not every hotel or guesthouse offers it
