Villa De Mekong Review: A Bungalow Stay in Central Vientiane

If you want to stay in central Vientiane but would rather avoid a typical city hotel, Villa De Mekong offers something a little different.

I stayed here myself and was especially drawn to its wooden bungalow-style rooms, leafy garden, and the small deck outside my room.

It is a good fit for travelers who value atmosphere and a convenient location more than large-scale hotel facilities.

In this review, I’ll cover what the room was like, what I enjoyed most, the location, and the concerns I had about noise and bugs before booking.

Villa De Mekong is a small hotel with just nine rooms.

One of its most distinctive features is that you can stay in a bungalow-style room while still being in central Vientiane.

I also found the price relatively reasonable during my stay.

The hotel is also close enough to the Mekong River and Vientiane Night Market to reach them on foot, which made it convenient for sightseeing and evenings out.

What Makes Villa De Mekong Different

A Bungalow Stay in Central Vientiane

Bungalows are not unusual in other parts of Laos, including places such as Vang Vieng.

What stood out to me here was being able to stay in one right in the middle of the capital.

From the outside, the rooms have a clear wooden bungalow feel.

Once I stepped inside, though, the atmosphere was quite different from what I had expected.

The interior felt cleaner, more finished, and more comfortable than the bungalow exterior might suggest.

Compared with other bungalows I had stayed in around Laos, Villa De Mekong was particularly easy to settle into.

The Deck Was My Favorite Part

My favorite part of staying at Villa De Mekong was the deck directly outside my room.

There was a table and chairs, and I enjoyed sitting there from late afternoon into the evening.

For me, having time to slow down and look out over the greenery was part of the value of staying here, not just an extra feature.

Breakfast was also served on the deck during my stay.

In the morning, a staff member brought breakfast to the deck.

My breakfast was simple: toast, a fried egg, fruit, and juice.

It was light, but it felt like just the right amount for the morning.

Room Comfort and Amenities

The Room Is Compact but Well Equipped

The room itself was not especially large, but it had the main things I needed, including air conditioning, a refrigerator, a TV, and a safe.

There was also a clothes rack, which stood out to me because I had not come across one at the other hotels I had stayed at in Laos.

The room and bathroom showed some signs of age in the smaller details, although this personally did not bother me much.

ADVICE ADDED

If newer finishes and a spacious room matter more to you than atmosphere, that is worth keeping in mind before booking.

One small touch I appreciated was a small snack waiting in the room when I arrived.

It was similar to a small sponge cake, and although it was a simple gesture, it made the arrival feel a little more welcoming.

Amenities and What You May Want to Bring

The room came with a fairly good selection of basic toiletries during my stay, including a toothbrush, shower cap, and razor.

Shampoo and body wash were provided, but there was no conditioner in the room during my stay.

If you normally use conditioner, it is worth bringing your own rather than assuming it will be provided.

A Small Green Escape in the City

Although Villa De Mekong is in central Vientiane, the property has a surprisingly leafy feel.

The grounds are not large, but the greenery gives the hotel a much more relaxed atmosphere than you might expect from its city-center location.

I enjoyed looking out over the garden from the deck, and it was also pleasant to take a short walk around the property.

You can walk around the grounds in just a few minutes, so this is not a large resort garden.

For me, it worked more as a small place to reset between outings.

A Small Gallery Behind Reception

There is also a small gallery behind the reception area.

Several paintings were displayed inside, and some had price tags attached.

The gallery itself is very small, so it makes more sense as a quick stop while walking around the garden than as a destination on its own.

Location: Easy Access to the Mekong and Night Market

Location is one of Villa De Mekong’s strongest points.

The hotel is in an area that makes it easy to get to cafés and restaurants, while also staying close to some of the places you may want to visit in the evening.

Walk to the Mekong River and Vientiane Night Market

Vientiane Night Market is within walking distance of the hotel, which I found especially convenient after spending time exploring the market in the evening.

The night market is held every night.

The hotel is also near the edge of Chao Anouvong Park, and I saw stalls aimed more at local visitors around this area during my stay.

It gave the neighborhood a lively, festival-like feel in the evening.

The Mekong River is also close enough to reach on foot, making it easy to head over for an evening walk around sunset.

Cafés and Restaurants Nearby

There are plenty of places to eat around the hotel.

Two places I particularly recommend based on my own visits are Tree Town Cafe and Le Vendôme Restaurant.

Tree Town Cafe has a stylish, photogenic interior that made me want to stop and take photos.

Le Vendôme Restaurant is a popular French restaurant.

I especially liked the lunch set because it felt reasonably priced when I visited.

Noise and Bugs: What I Actually Experienced

Before booking Villa De Mekong, two things in guest reviews made me hesitate: comments about noise from nearby karaoke and reports of bugs.

After staying there myself, neither became a major problem for me personally.

I could hear music coming from outside while I was relaxing on the deck in the evening, so I would not describe the surroundings as completely silent.

However, the sound did not bother me much during my stay.

As for bugs, I was fortunate not to encounter any at all.

That said, my experience should not be taken to mean that the property is completely bug-free.

There is plenty of greenery around the hotel, and the Mekong River is nearby.

There was insect repellent provided in my room during my stay, but I would still bring my own if this is something you are concerned about.

Who I Would Recommend Villa De Mekong For

Villa De Mekong is a hotel I would recommend to travelers who want to experience a little more local character while staying in central Vientiane.

It does not have the extensive facilities of a large hotel, and the rooms are not especially spacious.

Some details in the room and bathroom also show their age.

But those were not the things that defined the stay for me.

The main appeal is the combination of wooden bungalow-style rooms, a green garden, and a convenient central Vientiane location.

At times, sitting outside on the deck made it feel more like staying at a small resort away from the city, even though I was still in the capital.

At the time I checked, Trip.com showed a rating of 9.1 out of 10.

With only nine rooms, Villa De Mekong is a small property rather than a large hotel.

If you care more about atmosphere, greenery, and having a pleasant place to unwind than about polished luxury facilities, Villa De Mekong is well worth considering.
