Laos is the kind of country that makes you want to slow down, but moving between cities still takes some planning.

Vientiane, Vang Vieng, and Luang Prabang are three of the easiest cities to combine in one Laos itinerary, yet the best way to travel between them depends on the route.

After taking a local bus myself and comparing the available train, bus, flight, and taxi options, I found that the answer is not always simply “take the cheapest one.”

This guide explains which transport option makes the most sense for each route, especially if you are trying to balance time, budget, comfort, and ease of booking.

If you only want the simple answer, the Laos-China Railway should usually be your starting point when planning travel between Vientiane, Vang Vieng, and Luang Prabang.

That said, the best option changes depending on the route.

Vientiane to Vang Vieng is one of the routes where you have several realistic choices: train, express bus or minivan, local bus, and taxi.

Taking the Train from Vientiane to Vang Vieng

The train is a convenient option between Vientiane and Vang Vieng.

Depending on the season, there are around five trains per day, and the ride itself takes about one hour.

If you are not sure which option to choose, the train is usually the most straightforward starting point.

However, the railway station is a little outside the city center, and it is better to arrive at the station about one hour before departure.

Because of that, the train ride may be short, but the total door-to-door travel time can be longer than it looks.

Express Bus or Minivan from Vientiane to Vang Vieng

The express bus or minivan can also be a good option on this route.

The main reason is that there is an expressway between Vientiane and Vang Vieng.

By express bus, the trip can take around two hours.

Some minivans also include hotel pickup, which can make the journey feel much easier than arranging your own transport to the railway station.

Because there is an expressway between Vientiane and Vang Vieng, a minivan can be a practical choice for travelers who prefer a simpler door-to-door experience.

The main thing to know is that many express bus services are actually minivans, not large coaches.

Local Bus: Cheap, Slow, and More About the Experience

There is also a fully local bus option that does not use the expressway.

This type of bus stops at villages between Vientiane and Vang Vieng and takes around five hours.

The vehicle I used was not comfortable, but the experience itself was memorable.

When I took a local bus to Vang Vieng, I was the only traveler on board.

I talked with people sitting nearby, and some told me they were Hmong or Khmu.

That slow journey became one of the most enjoyable parts of the trip.

The local bus is not the most comfortable option, but it can be rewarding if you enjoy slow, local travel.

The fare was 100,000 kip as of December 2025, which was much cheaper than the train or express bus at that time.
